About the club

A proud Central Coast cricket story.

One of the oldest clubs on the Central Coast, the present Narara Wyoming Cricket Club was formed in February 1898 and has competed continuously ever since — a tradition built on family, fierce competition and giving every player their chance.

Our story

The Narara Cricket Club is believed to have first formed around 1880, before disbanding in the 1890s. The present club was re-formed in February 1898 and, with the exception of one season during each of the two World Wars, has played continuously ever since.

In its earliest years the team was made up almost entirely of the pioneering Gavenlock family. Legendary cricketer Paddy Clifton joined in 1901, married into the family and captained from 1906 until 1921. That Gavenlock influence has run through the club for more than a century.

In 1911/12 Narara was accepted into the Newcastle District competition and won it at the first attempt, with Arthur Brown scoring 243 not out — still the highest individual score in the association's history. The club later helped form the Gosford District Cricket Association in 1920, won its first local premiership in 1922/23, and saw the “B” side break away to compete as Wyoming in 1926/27.

After World War II the club rebuilt around Alan Davidson Park, and the 1960s and 70s brought a golden era: ten first grade premierships in 15 seasons. More recently the club has become a nursery for representative cricketers, with Andrew Sainsbury going on to play Sheffield Shield for NSW and Aaron O'Brien representing Australia at the 1999 Under-19 World Cup.
